Thesis title

‘Negotiating the Asylum: Patient Agency and Asylum Authority in Lancashire County Asylum 1840-1915’

Research summary

My thesis aims to understand how patients in Lancashire County Asylum were able to exercise agency within, or in spite of, the strictures of the institution in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. I examine patient casebooks, photographs and the material world of the asylum in order to understand how and why patients attempted to exert control over their situations in the ways that they did.
