Thesis Title

Space and Spontaneity: an interdisciplinary understanding of improvised performance, site and process.

Supervisors

Professor Stephen Bottoms, Drama, University of Manchester; Dr. Mark Riley, Geography, University of Liverpool.

Research Summary

My current doctoral project, conducted through practice, lies between performance studies and geography and at the intersection of improvisation; site-specific performance; more-than-representational theories of geography; and walking. Through the project I am conducting a series of place-based walking interviews with residents in the village of Hope, Peak District, and formulating their rich and multiplicitous responses (personal memory, “official” history, geology, folklore, myth etc.) into an improvised walking tour performance around the village.

Research Interests

Improvisation; site-specific performance; walking; non-representational theory; landscape; devised performance; collaborating with communities; participatory arts practices.
