Researcher-led placements

Researcher-led placements are created and driven by doctoral researchers. You can design your own project by approaching an external organisation of your choice, or browse our list of Strategic Partners for ideas and potential collaborators.

Planning your project

We recommend starting conversations with your chosen partner as early as possible. To help shape a focused and achievable project (up to 3 months full-time or part-time equivalent), use the:

  • Project Definition Template – a planning tool to outline your project’s aims and expected outcomes, developed jointly with your partner.

For advice and feedback during the planning stage, you can contact our Placements and Partnerships Officer. They can also review your template before you submit your application.

Together with your partner, you will also need to complete a:

  • Partner Information Form – includes key details about the organisation and a statement of support from your contact, explaining the value of the collaboration and your relevant skills.

Need help getting started?

If you’re still developing your idea, feel free to reach out to the PGR Placements and Partnerships Officer at nwcdtp@manchester.ac.uk for guidance.

You might also find the Researcher’s Project Proposition template helpful for shaping your project idea before reaching out to a potential partner for collaboration.

Ready to apply?

Applications should be submitted at least 2–3 months before your intended start date. If your placement involves travel or accommodation not covered by the host organisation, allow extra time to co-ordinate with your university’s PGR administrators. For overseas placements, visa arrangements may also be required so please factor in plenty of time for this.

For full details on eligibility, funding, and reporting requirements, please refer to the Guidance Document
