Researcher-Led Placements

Researcher-Led placements are projects that are initiated by doctoral researchers. Researchers are invited to design their own project after contacting and developing an idea with a partner of their choice, or explore our list of Strategic Partners to look for ideas and possible collaborations. In order to apply, applicants will need to complete and submit the online PGR Placement Application Form, 2 to 3 months in advance of the desired placement start date. If the project requires you to travel or to find accommodation, you can request additional funding separately, via the Student Development Fund. In order to apply, the following documentation will be required (templates downloadable from the online form):

  • A Partner Information form which includes a statement of support from the partner, which should comment on the value of the collaboration with the specific skills and expertise of the PhD researcher who is applying;
  • A Project Definition Document, with details of objectives and specific outputs related to the projectwhich will need to be completed in collaboration with the chosen partner.

For Researchers at the early stages of designing a project, we recommend contacting the PGR Placements and Partnerships Officer for support and advice, if helpful. The Researcher’s Project Proposition is a useful template to help you defining your project idea before contacting a partner to seek a collaboration.

Please refer to the Guidance Document for full details on the scheme, eligibility, funding and reporting requirements.
