Thesis Title

‘Picturing a Future France in French Fascism’, part of the CDA project ‘Visual Cultures of Fascism’

Institution

Manchester Metropolitan University

Supervisors

Dr Chris Millington (Manchester Metropolitan University)
Professor Roland Clark (University of Liverpool)
Dr Christine Schmidt (Wiener Holocaust Museum)

Research Summary

The research focusses on how fascist movements of the inter-war years used photography, film, and other visual materials to promote themselves and their programme. In particular my project explores the use of visual cultures by the French far right to both criticise the supposed ‘decline’ of France and to promote their own vision of France’s future as they envisioned it. In collaboration with the Wiener Holocaust Museum and the two other students looking at Italian and Romanian fascism, this project is an opportunity to widen our knowledge of the mechanisms of mass mobilisation through visual culture by the far right.
