Thesis Title

The Responses of the Lubavitcher Rebbe to the Holocaust: A Study of His Letters, Talks and Teachings

Institution

The University of Manchester

Supervisors

Prof Alex Samely
Prof Daniel Langton

Research Summary

The research focuses on historically interpreting and contextually evaluating the innovativeness of the responses to the Holocaust of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, one of the 20th Century’s most important Jewish thinkers, through his letters, talks and teachings. In providing a critical interpretation and contextualisation of the evidence of his responses to the Holocaust, I will evaluate how much they can be said to be influenced by his particular conceptualisation of history. I will also consider to what extent it is possible to locate them within, or in contrast to, modern Eurocentric (i.e. Christian) thought and to what extent theories of performativity can deepen our understanding of the nature of his responses.
