Thesis Title

A comparison of live and remote assessment of music performance in graded music exams

Institution

RNCM

Supervisors

Dr Michelle Phillips
Dr Robbie Gardiner

Research Summary

Each year, millions of musicians worldwide sit graded performance exams. Exam boards conduct these in various formats, but the balance in offering between in-person and remote assessment is in flux (particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic), and the advantages and disadvantages of each have been only peripherally discussed in relevant scholarship. At present, there is little understanding of the experiences of candidates, teachers and examiners engaging with these two streams of assessment, nor whether there is true parity between them. My research will explore these issues through focus groups, surveys and quasi-experimental work, aiming to gain an understanding of which groups might be advantaged, and disadvantaged, by the different modalities.
