Research Summary
Irreplaceable industrial objects are being removed from the environment at an alarming rate, and, along with this, visual evidence of working-class history in the landscape. This research, though situated in the North of England, has wider implications regarding loss, the commodification and decline of histories and heritage, cultural destruction, and systems of control.
This project will investigate the potential for poetic intervention in the post-industrial landscape, concentrating on Brutalist and Modernist architecture scheduled for demolition, regeneration, or in various states of disrepair. My creative practice inserts itself into these spaces, becoming embodied in remnants of industrial Northern heritage and the politics of urban development, with a focus on dream-states, the subconscious, and play as an act of resilience or refusal.
