Research Summary
The purpose of my research is to highlight and explore the piano Études of a neglected female composer, performer, pedagogue and early music researcher of the nineteenth century, who is worthy of rediscovery. Farrenc’s music was performed regularly until her death. Apart from Alphonse Ledouc’s effort to revive her music by publishing her Études a few years later, her music felt into oblivion. My research intends to fill this gap by addressing Louise Farrenc’s sets of Études for piano, and creating the first professional recording of all the Études. My interpretation will be based on the performance implications that arise from techniques, stylistic allusions and references to composers earlier and contemporary with Farrenc, an analytical study of the structure of her Études, and my personal experience as a practitioner.
