Thesis Title

Making the case: What does poetry do for young lives?

Institution

Manchester Metropolitan University

Supervisors

Prof Jean Sprackland
Dr Nikolai Duffy

Research Summary

The project seeks to address a key challenge faced by poets and poetry organisations working with young people: how to speak with confidence and credibility about why their work matters. While a wealth of anecdotal experience indicates that engaging with poetry affords various kinds of value, research to date has been scarce and limited in scope.

In order to establish, evidence and articulate that value, this project brings together Manchester Met, an academic centre of excellence in poetry, and Poetry by Heart, a high-profile project for children and young people across England since 2013. This collaboration will give the researcher a unique opportunity to bridge between scholarly and professional practices in poetry.
