Thesis Title

News media representations of homelessness in the UK: A corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis

Institution

Lancaster University

Supervisors

Dr Gavin Brookes
Professor Tony McEnery

Research Summary

The overarching aim of her study is to investigate how language is used to represent homelessness in the British press over 10 years (2014-2024). Employing a corpus-assisted approach to critical discourse analysis, her research will focus on linguistic choices which could stigmatise those with experiences of homelessness, and explore variations in such representations according to newspapers. In collaboration with homeless charities, this project encompasses the development of media guidelines to report on homelessness in ways that mitigate potential stigmatisation.
