Research Summary
This research considers a gallery archive through a curatorial methodology, questioning the way Castlefield Gallery’s archive impacts how staff, artists and audiences relate to the history of Castlefield Gallery. It argues that the archive – the structures and content by which the story of the gallery is retained and distributed – can exert an influence on how the gallery functions today. It finds curatorial methods to discuss and negotiate this influence, using interruptions to the archive and public events and exhibitions, using the Derridean notion of radical ‘Play’.
