Student-Led Group Residency ‘Practice and Research in Action’

by | Mar 23, 2017 | Uncategorised | 0 comments

26th-30th June 2017 at the Sidney Nolan Trust, Powys
Funded by Arts and Humanities Research Council, North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership.

Practice-based research is a growing methodology within arts and humanities. It is though relatively young and there is a hunger to exchange experiences and to refine approaches. This exciting residential opportunity will allow PhD students to work together in a shared space, exchanging knowledge, processes and skills, and to develop research methodologies in a supportive environment.
You are invited to join 8 practice-based PhD researchers in the rural and well-equipped setting of the Sidney Nolan Trust Arts Centre. Check their website for site-specific information and details of ongoing projects which could provide inspiration (www.sidneynolantrust.org). We hope this opportunity will attract researchers across a wide range of practice-based disciplines (music, visual art, creative writing, photography, philosophy, law, history etc.), thereby promoting cross-disciplinary networking.
Participants will co-produce a public event which will take place during the residency (e.g. exhibition, performance, installation, screening). Discussions, skill-sharing and presentations will centre around the advantages and challenges of combining practice and research, opening-up debates around the impact of this research beyond the academy.

NWCDTP Funding includes: Site fee at the Sidney Nolan Trust; support from experienced SNT staff; basic self-catering farmhouse accommodation in shared rooms; travel expenses up to £63 each, plus a group allowance for food and basic materials.

Commitments – participants will be expected to:
• Share skills, present works-in-progress and contribute to our dedicated blog.
• Contribute to the cooking, housekeeping and smooth running of the shared accommodation.
• Contribute to a collaborative public event during the residency.
• Complete a personal, post-residency evaluation.
• Attend the full residency 26th-30th June inclusive.
• Attend a briefing meeting at MMU in June and a follow-up meeting in July.
